Dr. Edward R. "Ed" Hackenbrack

11/09/1923 -08/22/2012    Dr. Edward R. “Ed” Hackenbrack, 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 22, 2012.  Ed resided in Moravian Hall Square, Nazareth, PA and was formerly from the Harrisburg area.

He was born on November 9, 1923 in Philadelphia, the son of the late Edward and Blanche (Loeffler) Hackenbrack.

Ed proudly served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during WWII.  He returned to the states where he studied to become an Optometrist at the Philadelphia School of Optometry.  He practiced his profession in a private practice and then with Morrison and Associates in Harrisburg.

Ed enjoyed many things during his long life.  He was an avid exerciser, a voracious reader and enjoyed watching and listening to every Philadelphia sports game he could find.  He rose to the level of a 32nd Degree Mason at the Scottish Rite Bodies and enjoyed his fellowship with his brothers at the Zembo Shrine where he was a member of the Greeters. He was a member of Pine Street Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg for over 50 years. He also enjoyed performing with the AARP chorus in Harrisburg.  He and his wife Inge enjoyed almost 50 years of marriage and traveled the world before she passed away in March 2004.

He was preceded in death by his wife Inge, his first son Edward, and his sister Doris Miller.
He is survived by his son Karl, his wife Christina and their children Max and Nicole, his son Paul, his wife Veronica “Ronnie” and their children Nicole and Megan. He is also survived by his brother Ken Hackenbrack and his sister Mildred Kohler.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Monday, August 27, 2012 at Pine Street Presbyterian Church, 310 North Third Street Harrisburg, PA, with Rev. Dr. Russell C. Sullivan, Jr. officiating.  Burial with full military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Viewings will be from 2pm until 4pm on Sunday, August 26, 2012 in the Hetrick-Bitner Funeral Home, and from 10am until 11am on Monday, August 27, 2012 in the church.
